Wayward Souls by Susan J. Morris

The second installment in the Harker & Moriarty series by Susan J. Morris, Wayward Souls takes us right back into the dark world where book one left off. Samantha Harker, daughter of Dracula's killer, and Dr. Helena Moriarty, daughter of the famed criminal mastermind and nemesis of Sherlock Holmes, are back in the field.

The story follows the women, now paired with Jakob Van Helsing, as they investigate the mysterious disappearance of field agents in Dublin, Ireland. As the mystery unfolds, more creatures, puzzles, and long-buried secrets begin to surface. The continued search for Sam's grandfather becomes a major focus of the novel, along with her internal struggles surrounding her supernatural abilities. Meanwhile, for Hel to avoid being held accountable for her father's crimes, she must first prove that he actually exists. Jakob, although unlikeable in the previous book—and even at the beginning of this one—gradually grows on you as the story progresses.

This novel is atmospheric, richly gothic, and action-packed. You may think you know the stories of these legendary characters, but Morris expands and intensifies the stakes while introducing new characters with flaws, motivations, and desires of their own. The chemistry between Sam and Hel, while not always at the forefront of the plot, helps us see them as fully realized characters rather than simply heroes on a mission.

I enjoyed every bit of this novel. Morris is exceptionally talented at both world-building and character development. The suspense and mystery keep you on your toes until the very last page. I'm excited to see where these characters go next.

If you're a fan of Sherlock Holmes, Dracula, Frankenstein, or Van Helsing, Wayward Souls is a must-read.
